8th Raid: [Video]

You were very certain you knew the way, and yet following you cost us at least three days of travel. I am unamused, Kael.

[The fire fox trotting along on the ground only responds to this with a sniff and a turned away head, dismissing his trainer's irritation completely. Illidan would roll his eyes if he still had them.]

Well, we are out now, which is what really matters, but I'm sorely tempted to delay your access to a fire stone for this incident once we actually reach Goldenrod.

[That statement gets Kael's attention back very quickly, and he immediately whips his head around to start jabbering angrily at his trainer, who simply arches a brow at him.]

You don't think that's fair? You wasted the rest of the team's time, and mine. A delay for you seems like quite a fitting punishment. And you can't argue that you dealt with a great deal of the wild opponents we met along the way. We wouldn't have run into them if not for you.

[Kael responds to this with what can only be described as a pout, and turns his head away again. Illidan snickers under his breath and addresses the gear more quietly.]

Quite the remarkable desire to evolve, he has. Tell me, you others out there in Johto, have you encountered any other Pokemon so eager to... change themselves?

Nope, but I've got a Slowpoke who won't evolve.

Sometimes they just do what they want, I guess.

Given the name, perhaps it is simply taking its time.

[ She blinks once before the joke catches up with her, then snickers. ]

Yeah, I guess. He takes his time with everything else.

[ A beat for thought, then: ] Y'know, maybe it's my fault. I didn't train him for a long time until, like... a couple weeks ago.

That's unsurprising, and arguably justified. I probably would not have set aside much time for an animal called "Slowpoke", myself. In my experience, speed is of the essence in combat.

[Patience is not his strong suit...]

I didn't really get him for battle. He reminds me of my brother. [ Her voice quiets briefly for that admission, but quickly returns to normal volume. ] That's why I didn't train him for a long time; it's not like I was gonna win a bunch of fights with him, anyway.

... Ah. That's more understandable, then.

[Though it does say something about her brother... he elects not to mention that, though, since he knows that even he would get pretty annoyed if people started insulting his brother, and they have a pretty rocky relationship.]

But you've elected to start training him now. Why?

[ She shrugs. ] I figure, like... I owe it to him to make him as strong as I can, I guess. I never really thought about it before, but if I disappear someday, I want him to be able to hack it in the wild, y'know?

There's logic in that. After all, I've heard that they come to us precisely for that very reason, because they believe we can make them stronger. And I've encountered plenty of evidence that suggests that theory is true. So to fail to train one would be... to fail them.

[He says those last words with clear distaste. Failure is one word that doesn't sit well with Illidan.]

Exactly. And I don't do failure. [ She sounds pretty matter-of-fact, herself. ]

I've had quite the opposite problem, actually. Only one of mine has evolved.

[Granted, two of his others can't evolve yet, but he does have two who won't evolve. This wouldn't be as problematic if they had enough power to back up their desire to remain tiny and cute.]

If I may ask, what level is your Vulpix?

[Logan has one as well and he's not sure when to evolve her.]

Indeed? Have you been able to determine why they're avoiding it?

[All of Illidan's have been pretty gung-ho on the whole evolution thing, really. Kael's just especially so.]

Fifty-eight. He learned his last technique a few levels ago, so if I'd had the stone I probably would have evolved him then.

From the sound of it, one of them simply doesn't want to and the other is afraid of the pressure that will be put on it should it evolve.

[Siiiigh. Being Logan is suffering.]

Where can you get the Fire Stone? I have one around the same level as well.

Pressure? It believes you would expect more of it after it evolves, so it deliberately avoids doing so?

[That's almost clever, in a lazy and cowardly way.]

The various stones are said to be sold in the large store located in Goldenrod City. I believe it was called the "department store".

Yes, that's it exactly.

[Oh he certainly agrees there. He's rather irked with her for that, but hopefully she'll get over that fear soon!]

In Goldenrod? That's certainly a good ways away...

[Ugh, they'll have to leave Violet, won't they? Great. He'll never get Reaver and Barry to leave...]

[Well, the Pokemon companions. As for the human ones, well, as far as Illidan's concerned that's not his problem.]

It seems to depend a lot on the individual pokemon, really.

... Yes, I more or less assumed that. One's acceptance of and capacity for change would be crucial to such a radical transformation. If a Pokemon were frightened of changing itself, it wouldn't want to evolve. That simply stands to reason.

[Illidan is basically calling Sion Captain Obvious for that remark.]

But resistance to change is the common view, at least where I come from. Kael's attitude is, as far as I know... not quite unique, but rare.

Of course, but I mean it doesn't seem to have much to do with particular species, or what causes them to be able to evolve, or so on. I believe some don't really see it as a "change" at all, so to speak, so much as "becoming stronger". Certainly several of mine seemed to entertain that attitude. Those who do see it as a change seem to tend to be more reluctant about it, though there's still others who just see to be too unmotivated to bother. Even so, I would think that the desire to be stronger or more powerful isn't necessarily that uncommon.

All reasonable points, though I'll admit I hadn't considered the idea that they might not even count the evolution as a major change to themselves.

Still, with Kael that clearly isn't the case. Even back when becoming a Ninetails would have been overall detrimental to his growth, he wanted me to find him a stone.

Many humans don't seem to think of growing up as a change like that, even though it's just a drastic, if over a longer period of time.

Though I can't say any of mine have been like that, to my knowledge. At least, none that required something like that to evolve. Even Lord and Lady wanted to build up their strength as much as possible first...

Perhaps it's simply the equivalent of one of those children who are desperate to grow up, to continue that particular analogy. Only for them, there actually is a way to do just that.

That's certainly a way to look at it. Though there's also adults who wish to change or better themselves at times, even if it's only through superficial means. And of course there's some who prefer to stay as they are, or are simply too lazy to bother with change.

Heh. Perhaps some Pokemon take after their trainers after all.

Change is an inevitable part of life. What matters is if you participate in the change, or are simply caught up in it. You cannot avoid it, no matter how much you might try. One could argue these Pokemon are wiser than people.

... Well, my people at least.

That, or too used to it to know the difference, perhaps. Since "evolving" is normal for most of them in the first place...

I've had plenty who wanted to evolve, not that I can blame them.

[He shrugs.]

With evolution comes strength and new abilities. Some of my Pokémon actually look down on anyone who refuses to evolve.

Yes... I would say if I were a Pokemon myself, I think I'd probably feel much the same way, come to think of it. But then, I've always been the type to embrace change in general.
